ort explanation, from my opinion, wat esr is:
I think of ESR as an unwanted (usually) resistor in series with a (more or les) perfect capacitor.
Some that are into choosing capacitors to voice their audio systems (in the audio signal path), may have a preference for one capacitor over another and ESR may play a roll.
In general, all other things being equal, and they usually are not, in any case in power supply design the lower the ESR the better.
The places where ESR bites you are at power filter caps, output caps, especially speaker driving capacitors, and high frequency switching power supplies.
It's a big deal when there's any substantial ripple voltage across the cap, because the ESR makes heat inside the cap. In some applications, a higher ESR cap can literally cook itself with ripple current, which goes up with the square of the ripple current. It's not exactly proportional to frequency, but it does change a bit with frequency, especially since the internal inductance keeps current from spreading all over the plate of the capacitor at very high frequencies.
Audio caps are optimized for Linearity and low Dielectric-Absorbtion - there are some low-ESR audiophile caps like

The inter-electrode spacer plays an important role in audio caps - various materials including silk have been tried. The foil etching and electrolyte composition also differs in audio caps. Leads need to be copper or other non-magnetic material on audiophile caps - any trace of iron, nickel or cobalt in the leads or plating is a strict no-no for audio caps in the signal path; it contributes unwanted inductance as well as EMI/RFI pickup.
Cap makers don't specify ESR, usually. They specify maximum ripple current, which is kinda the same thing, but it forces back on you to figure out what your ripple current is. That
